Nicotine (real name Brianna Zepeda)
* * *
One of the things I look forward to after finalizing my end of year list is the opportunity to read other people’s lists and listen to their recommendations, allowing me to discover new artists — something that I absolutely love doing. One recommended artist that I’ve had the pleasure of discovering during this period of time is Texas-born, New York-based singer Nicotine.
Nicotine is a self-described “Afrolatina pansexual song bird” gifted with a sultry voice. Her musical style features a mixture that heavily favors R&B/soul and jazz, with bits of hip-hop influence and spoken-word poetry.
Nicotine is also the frontwoman of the band Nicotine’s Famous Honey (alongside musicians Ian Olney and Hunter Lewis), with which she released her first major project, An Open Letter, in January of 2017. (The album was re-released earlier this year as a solo album.) Easy on the ears, Nicotine’s debut is full of warm production as well as personable songs that deal with subjects like heartbreak, relational drama, growth and self-love.
It’s a shame it took me almost two years to hear about this gem, because it most likely would’ve ended up on my personal list of favorite 2017 projects…but better late than never, I suppose.
Enjoy An Open Letter below.
