If you’ve been paying attention to the R&B/soul music coming out of the UK, then you’ve probably taken note of the plethora of powerful, soulful voices that have risen to prominence over the past few years — artists like Lianne La Havas, Jorja Smith, Nao, etc.
Brighton-based singer Celeste, though slightly lesser-known (for now), appears to be among this burgeoning group of majestic voices from across the Big Pond.
Sonically, Celeste’s voice harkens back to that of the late Amy Winehouse. A lot of her music relies on stripped back, jazzy backdrops which allow her to showcase her stunning vocals.
These songs, especially the ones on her latest EP Lately, have a little bit of a theatric edge to them, reminiscent of Nina Simone’s brand of cinematic soul. The titular track, “Lately,” sounds like it could be the theme song to the next James Bond movie, while “Both Sides of the Moon” is a hazy, downtempo ode to “tainted love” which showcases Celeste’s affinity for old-school soul — a product of having grown up on artists like Aretha Franklin.
If you haven’t heard Celeste’s music before, this is a good project to start with. I know I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for her debut album, which, according to her in an interview with Wonderland magazine, she hopes is finished “by the beginning of 2020.”
